The leather half-mask of a Long Hair Kachina, the Bringer of Gentle Rain. This Kachina has long, black hair to his waist and bangs in front. The long tail feather of a Macaw sticks up from the back of his head, and there are Eagle Prayer Feathers tied with home spun cotton hanging in front of his long beard that is square cut just above his waist.

“They are dancing. Barbarically beautiful, brilliantly colored. Gently waving their twigs of spruce, shaking their gourd rattles. Singing like the soughing of the wind through the pines. Stamping rythmically as the beat of the drum, insistently as the pulse of the earth.”

Frank Waters (1950)

  1. John, This painting draws me into a mystery…something hidden behind eyes and mask not like other kachinas your have painted before. Maybe it is how it fills the canvas with only a small portion without any detail.
Thanks, and stay safe and warm, Kayce

  2. Dictionery: Hopi katsina, supernatural being, masked impersonator of a supernatural being. I think it fits this one. I only see one eye unless the other one is covered up to show only one eye. I like your remark. It tells us more about him,or it could be a her. Everytime you paint one I think of spacemen. I truly believe they may have knew a few in their day.He does not scare me, seeing this one makes me wish I could go an talk to them.

  3. You are a person whose work shows exceptional creative ability and skill. A True Artist. The way you take pictures and make paintings keeps my brain working. I really appreciate being able to see your work like you protray it on the net.
