ZUÑI OGRE KACHINA / Daily Painting #964

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

I honestly don't know who this guy is. I've searched through my entire library of Kachina research, and find nothing that comes even close. He's most likely Zuñi, as may be seen by his matriculated arms and real rather than painted garb. Could he be from one of the Rio Grande Pueblos? I don't really know, but I doubt it.

At any rate, he's a fine looking figure, and was a joy to paint. He's obviously quite old, and his feathers are long gone. I have to wonder whether that tableta is an original part or something added from another doll. I photographed the subject several years ago, probably in a shop somewhere. I really do need to learn to take notes. That should be easy enough to do with my iPhone. I could start with “note to self…”

  1. I really do love the subtle colors and geometric forms. Background is very “pearly” which adds to the overall richness of this piece.

  2. Have always admired your Kachina paintings. Have always wished I could some day see them in person. Do you know just how many was made? The ones you have painted really have special meanings.
