Magical Mystical Mexican Horse / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches / Daily Painting #1394

This is actally the front part of a wearable bit of costume. With the front and back parts joined by strips of wood, the dancer is able to wear the horse around his waist. This way, he becomes Santiago on his white horse in the Santiaguito Dance.

This “mask” for want of a better word is probably from Puebla, or possibly Vera Cruz. I found it in the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, but have lost the label information that accompanied it.
