HOPI DANCE MAIDEN CARVING / Daily Painting #1398

Hopi Dance Maiden Carving / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches / Daily Painting #1398

I found this lovely old doll, worn and faded, yet beautiful in her simplicity, in Robert Cafazzo's Two Graces Plaza Gallery in Ranchos. It is a Hopi doll, but it is not a Kachina. Instead, it represents a female dancer, one who performs in social dances, rather than in Kachina Dances. Female Kachinas are always represented by male dancers, and wear masks. Social dancers are female, with white painted faces and usually wear tabletas.

  1. Our history of how the first white people treated the Hopi Indians was good. Maybe that is why she is shown with white face. Then years later other whites moved in and refused to learn from them how to live with nature. Love the way you portray them. Has a soft and loving expression. They were truly peaceful people.
