Currently, I'm wrestling with just how I want to continue this blog. As you may know by now, I have really loved and thoroughly enjoyed the daily 6 x 6 inch paintings. And the recent Confections have really been a blast. But I am missing the chance to do more of these full-fledged watercolors. I would occasionlly like to work larger, too.

So. here's my thinking at the moment. I'm thinking I will switch from the current format of always doing the same size and the same beginning bid, or, as has been the case with the Confections, one price fits all, regardless of size or complexity, to a more varied approach. One that fits not only my love of varied sibjects and styles, but differing sizes and mediums, as well.

I will be offering everything from tiny sketches to full sheet watercolors, to both smaller and larger oils, and just about everything in between. I hope it will be more entertaining than confusing, and that you will all continue to follow along.

By the way, I hope to be traveling again, soon, and will try to make my verbal input more interesting as my adventures unfold.

I hope you will all help me with this, because I would love to hear your thoughts. I appreciate each and every comment, as well as your bids! Please, don't be shy, join in. Let's make this blog as interesting as it can be, together.

Please remember that if you would like to commission a larger version of your favorite subject, if you would like to check on the availability of a given image, or if you would like to schedule a workshop, we are just a phone call away, at 505 982-4561, or you can email us at: john@johnfarnsworth.com.

FRENCH RACE HORSES / Daily Painting #1044

Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches.

Thea and I found these vintage French lead toy race horses at an antique fair on the Canal Saint Martin in Paris several years ago. I have enjoyed both painting and photographing them many times since then.

This is number twenty five in the popular new “Confections” series. I'm having a great time with these, and apparently so are many of you.

BARREL RACER / Daily Painting #1050

Pen / Ink / Watercolor / 4.5 x 9 inches

Due to the great response to Ride.'Im Cowboy on Saturday, I decided to again suspend the regular auction for a day. The second “Confection”, Team Work, also turned out to be a big hit, as well as a lot of fun for me to create. So here we go again, with the third in what could become a regular feature here, going to the first person in with a $100 bid. That's right, the first hundred takes it. Don't wait!

CORRIENTES RESTING / Daily Painting #983

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

These stars of the roping and bulldogging Rodeo events, seen taking a backstage break between Rodeo performances, can be traced back to the first cattle brought to the new world by the Spanish as early as 1493.

One of my favorite films, Pocket Money, starring Paul Newman and Lee Marvin, centers around the hilarious adventures involved in buying and returning to the States with a herd of Corriente Steers for use in Rodeos. The film is based on the book Jim Kane by J.P. S. Brown.

NEARING / Daily Painting #947

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

I'm not sure I could have painted this before I started doing the abstract paintings that have become so important to me as a daily painter. That's not to say I couldn't do something equally good. It's not that it's better than the way I would have done it before. It's more about meeting a challenge, reaching a goal. Learning something new and growing a bit. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Looking back over some of my earlier pieces, I realize that I have, in fact, painted much like this on occasion. But not deliberately. Not confidently. Now, I'm becoming secure in the knowledge that I will be able to repeat the technique intentionally, whenever needed. That's a darn good feeling!

A quick study today for a composition I'm thinking of for this summer, based on some of the stock from the rodeos in Lake Havasu City and Wickenburg.

LONGHORN STUDY

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

Last night in Wickenburg was cold, it rained most of the night, and the wind rocked ol' Betsy like a cradle. I was up early and off to the parade, where I photographed non stop for about two hours, then to the Seven Bar Cafe, downtown, where I snagged a parking spot, for a lunch of fried chicken and mashed potatoes (an exception, but what the heck, it was cold and I've been behaving for days).

By the time I finished lunch, it was time for the rodeo and another two and a half or three non stop shooting hours. It was so cold, and I'd been standing on uneven ground for so long, that when I turned to leave I could hardly walk, and must have looked like some doddering old man. And I'm not even 72, yet!

I reported right to Betsy and, because there was no time to download any of the day's research, I painted this Longhorn Study that I've been sneaking up on ever since I visited my friend and ace mechanic Austin Stockdale's place on the ranch in Victorville.

Tomorrow is going to be a long day of catching up on image management, probably in the library, if it's open.
