Low tide on the black edge of the Pacific in the little fishing village of San Blas, Nayarit, forty years ago. I can't count the times I've wanted to paint this scene over the years, but just couldn't get up the nerve. Well, better late than never.
On my upcoming travels, I'm going to try to paint a few on site, but really, what I would like most to do is simply develop the habit of painting a scene soon after seeing it. I hope to do each day's painting from that day's experiences. Wish me luck.
My tendency for many years, has been to let an image percolate in the back of my mind. I like to take a lot of photographs, then comb through them repeatedly over time. Certain ones catch my attention, but just aren't ready to be painted, until, suddenly, one will stop me in my tracks and seem to shout I'm ready. Or almost ready, in which case I will visit more frequently for a while, and imagine it as a painting. Then, when I least expect it, the time will have come to commit it to paper or canvas.
For me, this one was worth the wait.
