Now for something different. But first, some background. Yesterday's painting, Scratchers, was painted in a motel room near the airport in Albuquerque. This morning, Monday, that is, we got up at 4am. (I'm accustomed to getting to bed at 3am. Or later.) at 6:30, we flew out of Albuquerque, on our way through Dallas/Fort Worth, and on to Mexico City, where we arrived at 12:20 in the afternoon.
We checked into our hotel and got cleaned up, then went exploring, had dinner, and back to the hotel a little after dark. Oops! The light in the room is dismal. Nice room, lousy lighting, at least for painting.
Really large paintings aside, I have painted for years, whether in oil, acrylic or watercolor, especially watercolor, with no preliminary drawing. Then I began doing small sketches I called confections, as they were almost like mini-vacations from the serious work I normally worked on. They were in ink, with color added, mostly as accents.
Recently, the confections have gradually matured into a whole new body of work. I'm enjoying this new direction more and more as it unfolds. Both the drawing and the painting. In fact, I've been thinking I might start mixing things up a bit. Some days, I will feature watercolors, on other days, oils, or drawings. Drawings that can stand on their own merits
Which brings us to today's work, a drawing of the Palace of Fine Arts, a beautiful building just a couple of blocks from the hotel. I was getting ready to paint it as a night scene, when I thought, why ruin a good drawing by trying to paint over it in watercolor with the awful light in this hotel room?
So here it is, today's image, a drawimg for today, that will, with better light, become tomorrow's watercolor. Stay tuned.
