Calavera de San Angel / Watercolor / 6 x 9 inches
In a corner of the garden of an estate turned antiques and arts store in the beautiful area of Mexico City known as San Angel, I was taken by surprise by this giant, twelve to fifteen foot Calavera, or Skeleton, twisting in the wind. The Mexicans are not a bit afraid to stare death straight in the face. Depictions of skeletons are everywhere. But when you come across one this large, and it is not in a parade or ceremony, you pay attention. I did, and couldn't wait to get it down on paper.
