TRES OREJAS / Daily Painting #1110

Watercolor / 6 x 8 inches

If you would like to own today's painting, send your bid (Minimum $200) in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

Thea and I had to take care of some shopping in Albuquerque, and I was anxious to make a test run, prior to my upcoming travels, so we drove down late on Friday and spent Saturday there. Our business taken care of, we did some shopping. While Thea was in the mall, I stayed in the car, in the parking lot, to do some work on my iPad.

But I decided this might be a good time to do the day's painting. I remembered that I had a tiny palette in one pocket, and a small reservoir brush and a pen in another.

I had tried, on the way from Taos, to capture a snapshot of a view I had long wanted to paint. Tres Orejas (Three Ears, a local landmark) as seen from The Horseshoe curve on hiway 518 as it skirts the base of the Picuris mountains.

I was scrolling through my shots, and there it was! So, here it is transformed into a watercolor painted while sitting in the car, using these small, very transportable tools. I deem it a trial run success!

Thea returned just as I was finishing, and caught me in the act with her iPhone.

This little child's novelty tin palette had set me back some seventy nine cents when I purchased it years ago as a joke, thinking it would be fun to have it lying around conspicuously in the studio. A few days ago, though, it occured to me to remove the small pans of dubious quality paints, and replace them with my own favorites. With this in the watch pocket of my jeans, that little reservoir brush filled with water, and a pen, all I need is some paper and a subject, and I'm ready to travel.

TAOS GATE / Daily Painting 1041

Back in January of 2011, I posted a photograph, made from a shot I had taken some years earlier, on my other blog, When a Painter Snaps.

My first daughter, Leah, left this comment:

JANUARY 1, 2011 @ 2:23 PM
This picture is Wonderfull !! It reminds me so much of the gates that I opened when I was a kid and the river was up and we would have to take the long way into town. I must be getting old, it made me cry!

Here is that photograph:

And here's a watercolor that I painted today, based on that image:

Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches.

That is how I work. Some of the time. At other times, I work plein air, usually when traveling. Or I may work from brand new sketches or photographs. I like to keep myself guessing!

Currently, I'm wrestling with just how I want to continue this blog. As you may know by now, I have really loved and thoroughly enjoyed the daily 6 x 6 inch paintings. And the recent Confections have really been a blast. But I am missing the chance to do more of these full-fledged watercolors. I would occasionlly like to work larger, too.

So. here's my thinking at the moment. I'm thinking I will switch from the current format of always doing the same size and the same begining bid, or, as has been the case with the Confections, one price fits all, regardless of size or complexity, to a more varied approach. One that fits not only my love of varied sibjects and styles, but differing sizes and mediums, as well.

I will be offering everything from tiny sketches to full sheet watercolors, to both smaller and larger oils, and just about everything in between. I hope it will be more entertaining than confusing, and that you will all continue to follow along.

By the way, I hope to be traveling again, soon, and will try to make my verbal input more interesting as my adventures unfold.

I hope you will all help me with this. I would love to hear your thoughts. I so appreciate each and every comment, as well as your bids! Please, don't be shy, join in, let's make this blog as interesting as it can be, together.

LE PETITE MAISON / Daily Painting #955

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

While teaching a workshop in Eymet, France in 2009, I had the pleasure, along with my students, of visiting the beautiful medieval village of Beynac, in the Perigord region of south west France, which rises 500 feet from the Dordogne River to the castle, Château Beynac. On the way up to the castle, I was taken by this lovely stone cottage, situated on the narrow, winding, cobbled path.

After painting it, and while putting this post together, I decided I'd better do a little research to make sure I had the name of the village and all the spelling right. That's when I came across the listing for the charming Le Petite Maison on Vacation Rentals by Owner. Check it out here http://www.vrbo.com/108748.

ROAD TO THE CLOUDS / Daily Painting #940

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

If you would like to own this painting, just send your bid in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

I really don't expect anyone else to see the difference in this cloud scene. I felt the difference, though. After looking back over past daily paintings, I realize that the abstracts, and maybe just the act of painting every day, have been affecting the way I've been painting for quite a while.

The subtle difference is that it's now consciously deliberate. It's like having an entirely new set of tools, and they're not borrowed, they are all mine. Now, let's see what I else can do with them.
