THE FARRIER’S BENCH / Daily Painting #1165

Watercolor / 6 x 9 inches

Another of my favorite things to paint, a found still life. Something I come across in the course of a day. A chance arrangement of forms, shapes, colors, light and shadow. Nothing formal, just something that catches my eye, something I wish to share. As found.

Part of the delay I'm experiencing is the experimenting and searching for the best materials to take with me for the sort of work I will be doing in my travels. This study in grays, for instance, is a found still life on a paper I found in Santa Fe, yesterday, at Artisans. It's a FLUiD Watercolor Block, 140 lb, Cold Press Finish.

It comes in a 6 x 6 inch block, glue bound on two edges. I like it. And it felt good working in that square format again. I also tried one on their Hot Press Finish block, but I'm not crazy about the result. I'll try them both again tomorrow. I have one more paper to try then it will be time to decide!

HER BOOTS / Daily Painting #969

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

Scuffed, worn, comfortable, they've been around a dance floor or two. I know that because mine were there, too. For better than twenty years and going strong.

All the time I spend prowling antique malls and junk stores with my iPhone sometimes feels like a waste. But for someone who loves to paint found still lifes, it can be worthwhile. Sometimes I get dazed and just shoot randomly, figuring if I don't shoot, I can't get anything at all.

This photo, for instance, doesn't look like much. In fact, it's just the kind of shot that I would kick myself for when going though the day's work, tired hungry and discouraged. But I know better than to delete anything that's at least recognizable.

Weeks, months, as in this case, or even years later, looking through fresh, clear eyes, I can see interesting things like this little collection of bottles jumping right out at me, begging to be painted.

If you haven't already, I hope you'll have a look at the daily photos on my newly reworked blog When a Painter Snaps…

NOTE:

I spent quite a bit of time recently, responding to comments on previous posts. For some unknown reason, most of them never showed up on the blog. I'm working on a solution. In the meantime, I hope all of you who have left comments here and on whenapaintersnaps know how very much your comments are appreciated and how important they are to me, especially when I'm tempted to falter.

It can be especially difficult to keep both blogs going on a daily basis while traveling. I can't always respond, but I always read and appreciate them.

I would love to see more dialog forming between those who follow my blogs and comment on them. Hint, hint.

When I saw these two little scooter ponies at the flea market in Quartzsite I was tempted, briefly, very briefly, to mount one on top of Betsy, sort of like an oversized take on a hood ornament. Sometimes it's best to keep one's creativity in check! I'm sure they would look much better on your wall.

Meanwhile, I took my iPhone to the classic car show today in Wickenburg, and let my creative urges run wild…
