Here's a favorite subject not often visited on my daily panting blog. I'm so accustomed to painting horses larger than life size, that the thought of squeezing them onto a six by six inch format seems almost impossible. But it isn't.

I really enjoyed putting these guys together. Maybe I'll try doing them more often.

I met my good friend and collector Jay at the Heard Museum Indian Fair today, and had such a good time I almost forgot to do today's painting. Thanks for alerting me to the time, Jay.

Hmmmm, 898. A song is swirling around in my head 898.6 dah da da da medicine… Man, I wish I had a memory for songs and groups and all. I guess I should just be happy I remember the songs at all.

While I'm trying to pull up the rest of that song in my head, and going in for dinner, why don't you …

A long day got off to a slow start, followed by a very nice dinner with son, Buck, and granddaughters Chelsea, Brooke and Amanda, then a nice long visit with cousin Cheryl. So, a short post followed by a long night's sleep. I hope!

When I saw these two little scooter ponies at the flea market in Quartzsite I was tempted, briefly, very briefly, to mount one on top of Betsy, sort of like an oversized take on a hood ornament. Sometimes it's best to keep one's creativity in check! I'm sure they would look much better on your wall.

Meanwhile, I took my iPhone to the classic car show today in Wickenburg, and let my creative urges run wild…

That's what I did. I left Yuma. Headed North, planning to work my way over to Wickenburg for the big rodeo this weekend. I took it easy today, caught up on some reading, got Betsy's fluids topped off and her tires checked. Didn't make it over to the old Territorial Prison, or a couple of other things I wanted to check out, but my feet started itching and I decided to leave something for next time. Besides, what's Yuma without Thea?

What a great day this has been! Started out by getting some shots of Great White Egrets, right by where I was camped by the river,

A quick breakfast of coffe and a danish, a brief phone visit with Thea, a little shopping, and it was off to the Rodeo. Igot some good research, including some of the best horse shots in ages, a bunch of action shots that will be the basis of some new “confections”, those little pen, ink and watercolor action pieces that i so enjoy doing, yet don't do nearly often enough, plus some portrait / character study material.

When the Rodeo was over, I jumped into Betsy and made today's painting right there in the parking lot, while the traffic cleared. After that, I drove around photographing the beautiful local desert and jagged mountain landscape along with some really fine cloud formations until dark.

Now I'm in Hastings' Bookstore, in a big, comfy leather chair, downloading images and creating my blogs. After this it will be time for dinner and my camp by the river… Life is Grand!

THE RACE IS ON Daily Painting #845

THE RACE IS ON

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

It felt like about time for another in the series of rider paintings. How about some cowboys putting on an impromptu race, just for the hell of it?

NOTE:

I've decided to start posting as soon as the blog is ready, rather than waiting for midnight as I have been doing. This has become difficult while traveling and trying to change to an earlier schedule.

NEW NOTE:

Thea has suggested that we open the bidding window to a week. So here goes. From now until further notiice the bidding will remain open for one week from time of posting. Please let us know how you feel about this change, pro or con. Any suggestions you have will also be considered.

We greatly appreciate the support shown by our followers, commentors, viewers, and, especially, our bidders and collectors. Thanks again to all of you from both of us.

GRAZING Daily Painting #799

GRAZING

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

If you would like to own this painting, just email your bid to: bid@johnfarnsworth.com

We spotted these horses grazing near Abiquiu Lake on our first day out. I liked the way the foreground hill side and the tree framed the horses and made them seem even farther away.

We left Parker, Arizona late this morning, crossed the Colorado River into California and the small former settlement of Rice. Formerly a watering station on the railroad during the days of steam locomotives, then a section house for track crews, it was more recently a service station, and probably a store and cafe. Little remains of Rice, but we both enjoyed photographing what was left.

La Acequia Daily Painting #798

LA ACEQUIA

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

If you would like to own this painting, just email your bid to: bid@johnfarnsworth.com

An acequia is an irrigation ditch. It carries water to the fields in and around Taos, as well as serving as a focal point for the social life of the community.

We had a nice, leisurely start this morning. Breakfast at La Posada, followed by photographing around the hotel and the town. We then drove straight through to LakeHavasu City, with a couple of brief stops for photography. LHC was packed, so we drove on to Parker, where we got a room, had some dinner and turned in.

A lone rider races up and over a hilltop ahead of a looming storm. We had to make a quick trip to Santa Fe today, so there won't be a lot of words on this post.
