THE RABBIT HUNTER / Daily Painting #1041

Watercolor / approximately 9 x 10 inches

Because half the students in my recent workshop were interested in learning watercolor and the other half in oil, I demonstrated in both mediums. Here's another demo watercolor from that workshop. This one shares its origins with #1037, the one of cattle GOING TO WATER. I'm delighted by the response to my inclusion of watercolor on this blog. There will be more watercolors in future posts. Thanks so much for all the positive and encouraging comments both here and in person.

I have to tell you, I don't know where these semi abstract rider paintings are taking me. Into some as yet uncharted territory, for sure. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see. Meanwhile…

NOTE:

I spent quite a bit of time recently, responding to comments on previous posts. For some unknown reason, most of them never showed up on the blog. I'm working on a solution. In the meantime, I hope all of you who have left comments here and on whenapaintersnaps know how very much your comments are appreciated and how important they are to me, especially when I'm tempted to falter.

It can be especially difficult to keep both blogs going on a daily basis while traveling. I can't always respond, but I always read and appreciate them.

I would love to see more dialog forming between those who follow my blogs and comment on them. Hint, hint.

A long day got off to a slow start, followed by a very nice dinner with son, Buck, and granddaughters Chelsea, Brooke and Amanda, then a nice long visit with cousin Cheryl. So, a short post followed by a long night's sleep. I hope!

A lone rider races up and over a hilltop ahead of a looming storm. We had to make a quick trip to Santa Fe today, so there won't be a lot of words on this post.

BACK TO NATURE

But not too far back, obviously. Shelter, a warm bed, food and water. Still, it’s great to leave town and work behind for a while; spend time walking, stalking through the woods, and along the streams, sitting in a blind, if that’s your style, and, with luck, bringing home organic, grass fed meat for the family. Nights around the fire, antlers for the wall, memories for a lifetime, all add to the simple  joys of deer season’s yearly ritual.

A FAVORITE CAMPSITE

One of my favorite places to camp, this is just above Dry Beaver Creek in Arizona, south of Sedona. It’s the place where my Dad taught me the joys of quail hunting. It’s also the place where I was first able to out-walk him. That was a sad day for me. Until then, I’d never been able to keep up with him. Despite the name, this is also the place where I witnessed a serious flash flood. I heard it long before I saw it. Fortunately, I wasn’t down along the creek bed when it came.

BROWSING

Fingers blackened by age old dust in crowded, jam-packed used book stores on Hollywood Boulevard and on La Cienega in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Powell’s in Portland and the Strand in New York, the Antiquarian and Guidon Books in Scottsdale,  and the Changing Hands in Tempe,  in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, and Albuquerque’s Page Plus Too and Simmons and Simmons; in Santa Fe, Nicholas Potter, Books and More Books, Garcia Street Books and Collected Works in the late ’80s and ’90s and on into the 2000s, I have spent some of my favorite hours. There were others, too, in Durango, in Nogales, Bookman in Flagstaff and Tucson, and in numerous small towns and cities from San Francisco to Paris’ Shakespeare and Company.

Then there were the hours, years, reading, re-reading and treasuring the friends found in those stores. Turning brittle, browned pages, poring over beautiful illustrations, learning, exploring, expanding my horizons, and discovering myself and the worlds around me. I love used bookstores and I love used books.
