MORNING KACHINA Daily Painting #1305

Morning Kachina / Ink and Watercolor / 7 x 10 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

I’m not entirely certain of the name I’ve given this Katsintihu, but it could be a variarion of the Early Morning Kachina described by Colton. Kachinas vary by village, by carver, by clan, and from year to year, making identification often quite uncertain.

ZUÑI SIPIKNE KACHINA Daily Painting #1304

Zuñi Sipikne Kachina / Ink and Watercolor / 7 x 10 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

This is a doll whose paint has been largely faded away. When new his eyes would have been joined and he would have had painted flower designs in place of ears. Sipikne is a warrior or guard Kacina and appears as six Kachinas of different colors, guarding the towering Shalako Kachina,

The yellow feathers represent the North. The Zuñi believe in six sacred directions, each represented by a color. North, yellow, South, red, East, white, and West, blue, plus Above, all colors, and Below, black.

WAKAS (COW) KACHINA / Daily Painting #1302

Wakas (Cow) Kachina / Ink and Watercolor / 7 x 10 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

Another Cow Kachina? Obviously Wakas is one of my favorites. Cattle were introduced to the Hopi people by the Spaniards. The Spanish for cows is vacas, which explains the Hopi version, Wakas.

I was long perplexed by the English word, Sherry, said to hace derived from the name of the town of its origen in Jerez de la Frontera, in Spain’s Andalucia. Jerez, pronounced herez, just didn’t evolve easily in my mind into Sherry. Harry’s, maybe, but not Sherry.

The problem was solved on my recent visit to Jerez, when, as I was leaving the train station I noticed a small tienda across the street. Its name on a large sign above the entrance was Xerez. Apparently an early spelling of the town’s name. That x would have been pronounced like the something between a soft h and the soft ch of the French word cheri. And with a slight slurring of the final z, we have shery, but with a rolled r, doubled and dropped by the English.

That’s my thinking, anyway. A better theory from someone more learned would be appreciated here. But for me, for now, it’s problem solved.
