PALHIK MANA KACHINA MAIDEN / Daily Painting #1265

Palhik Mana Kachina Maiden / Painted on my iPad Air / ArtRage 3

I just had to do another kachina on my iPad. And who better than the beautifl Pahik Mana for my model. Unlike the Qõqõlo that I did recently, I wanted this one to have the sketch lines showing. I like this effect. I would love to hear your opinions.

On another note… Yipee! I have finally managed to get my Lumix Link wifi app working so I can move images from my camers to my iPad Air. I won't bore all of you with the details, but if any of you have questions abou this, just shoot me an email and I will be happy to help you any way I can.

Happy Easter, everyone. Monday marks the beginning of my revisit to the famous Pueblos Blancos. I think you're going to enjoy this. As much as I've appreciated this past week of rest and work and routine, it will be good to be moving again.

¡Hasta mañana!

NA-NGASOHU KACHINA / Daily Painting #1192

Na-ngasohu Kachina / Pen and Ink / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

Na-ngasohu, the Chasing Star, or Planet Kachina should be sporting a Plains Indian headdress, but time and handling have reduced any feathers he might originally have had to a ball of fluff.

Other versions might be green or yellow with a black star. Each village, kiva, and even individual may vary the colors and markings.

Time for another Confection. I'm having a great time with these, and apparently so are many of you.

Be the first person in with a $100 bid, because the first hundred takes it!

KIVA SHADOWS / Daily Painting #1188

KIVA SHADOWS / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

Regular followers are probably aware of my fondness for taking subjects as I find them, as in my “confections” series, as opposed to more formal set ups.

This menacing little Chaveyo Kachina from our own collection, though, having been painted several times, seemed ready to appear in a staged painting.

The one disappointment at the time I was privileged to witness dances in the Hopi Kivas, was the use of Coleman lanterns with their characteristically harsh, cold, white light. So I thought it would be fun to romanticize this scene a bit and paint it as I imagined it would appear by firelight.

Now, that was fun!

MYSTERY KACHINA / Daily Painting #1186

Mystery Kachina / Pen and Ink / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

OK, I'm stumped. At first I thought this was a Supai Kachina. Now I'm not so sure. I have a box of my Kachina Note Cards waiting for the first person who can properly and correctly identify him.

ZUÑI SHÁLAKO KACHINA / Daily Painting #1159

Watercolor / 6 x 9 inches

I never tire of painting the Shalako Kachina. From the giant, twelve foot tall Zuñi Kachina with his clacking beak, the many Zuñi dolls representing him, in all their finery, such as this one, to the shorter, painted, Hopi Sio Shalako versions. Well, I never tire of painting Kachinas, period. I should say the House Blesser, in its many variations is a favorite among favorites.

The Shálako festival, on or about December 1, is a remarkable sacred drama, enacted in the open for the double purpose of invoking the divine blessing upon certain newly built houses, and of rendering thanks to the gods for the harvests of the year. (Wikipedia)

SIPIKNE KACHINA / Daily Painting #1158

Watercolor / 6 x 9 inches

Sipikne is a Zuñi Kachina, but also appears in the Bean Dance on the Hopi First Mesa. He is a guard and carries a yucca whip and a bow and arrows.
