Day’s End

This group of cottonwood trees is something I just can’t resist shooting any time I pass it on my way to Albuquerque. I decided to add a hint of a campfire to thescene by moving a spot of light from the setting sun, using TouchRetouch’s clone stamp and painting over it a little using the healing tool and the dodge and burn tool in Snapseed.

PORCH LIGHT ON COW SKULL / Daily Painting #1345

Porch Light on Cow Skull / watercolor / 6 x 9 inches

Here’s one I’ve been wanting to paint for quite a while, now. I just could never, quite, ” see” it. Until today.

Today it practically painted itself. Some paintings need time to percolate.

RED ONION AND GARLIC / Daily Painting #1315

Red Onion and Garlic / Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

Well, alright, maybe I’m not the most available, the most cooperative, and the most affordable model available. The kitchen is full of models thst have me beat. They’re better looking, besides. And since things in the kitchen are always in a state of flux, the opportunities for found still life subjects are the best in the house.

Whenever I spot something interesting, like this onion and garlic in a small Italian bowl, I whip out my iPhone and snap a few quick shots. I don’t give it much thought at this point. Instead, I act more or less instinctively, shooting rapidly, from varying angles and distances.

Occasionally, an idea will come to me almost instantly, and will demand too be painted as soon as possible. But most often, an image, or group of images, will remain in my files for anywhere from days to years. Then, suddenly, while cruising absent mindedly through my research, something clicks. An image jumps out from the rest and I know its time has come.

That doesn’t always mean it’s ready just as it is, though. It simply means that something in it has resonated in me, and now I have to work with the image, cropping, framing, teasing until it becomes clear to me what the essence of it is, and how best to express that essence.

Then I jump in and push paint around for an hour or two, and Bingo! With luck, there it is. The special something that I saw and can now share with you. Enjoy.

Conversation, Seville, Spain / Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

The Flamenco dancer took a break and the conversation resumed. As did my people watching, and working on my tapas y caña. In the tiny Bar de Tapas, Milagritos.

KIVA SHADOWS / Daily Painting #1188

KIVA SHADOWS / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

Regular followers are probably aware of my fondness for taking subjects as I find them, as in my “confections” series, as opposed to more formal set ups.

This menacing little Chaveyo Kachina from our own collection, though, having been painted several times, seemed ready to appear in a staged painting.

The one disappointment at the time I was privileged to witness dances in the Hopi Kivas, was the use of Coleman lanterns with their characteristically harsh, cold, white light. So I thought it would be fun to romanticize this scene a bit and paint it as I imagined it would appear by firelight.

Now, that was fun!
