Red Door at Ollantaytambo / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

In Peru’s Sacred Valley of the Incas, near Machu Picchu, there is another important ruin, Ollantaytambo. In the town of the same name, there is this red door, or gate. I don’t know what lies beyond. If you do, I’d love to hear from you. I hope to return there some day, with more time to spend painting, exploring, and photographing. My last trip in the area was mostly spent in the nearby village of Pisac, photographing the market and environs. You may see many of my photographs from the area by clicking here.

Bear Fetish / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

This is a painting of a clay bear with a fetish bundle attached. Bear fetishes are common to the Navajo, Hopi, Zuñi and other Southwestern Indian Tribes. I spotted this one in the home of a friend.

AMERICAN BISON Daily Painting #76

American Bison / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

Thea had a great idea for a show while we still had the gallery open on Canyon Road, here in Santa Fe. Street Dogs and Wild Buffalo. I jumped on that idea, grabbed my grandson and headed for Yellowstone for a week of research. I doubt I’ll ever tire of painting these great symbols of the American West. If you haven’t been to Yellowstone to see the Buffalo and all the other great wildlife, right now would be a great time to go, while the leaves are turning, and before winter sets in. But if you can’t go right now, maybe this old fellow could keep you company.

TAOS SUNSET WITH PEDERNAL Daily Painting #75

Taos Sunset with Pedernal / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

For those who don’t know it already, that flat topped mesa on the right is the Pedernal, a prominent and familiar feature on the Northern New Mexico landscape. Georgia O’Keeffe featured it in many of her paintings, and has been quoted as saying, “God told me if I painted that mountain enough, he’d give it to me.” I hope she doesn’t mind my borrowing it once in a while.

I am having a ball with these little sunset paintings. Well, I’m having a ball with this whole painting a day thing. The Kachinas, masks, people, landscapes, animals, and all the rest make for never a dull day for me, and I hope, for all of you who are enjoying seeing them, and, especially, all of you who are adding them to your collections. Thank you all for your attention, your comments, and your bids.

Wolfie, Again (Wolf Kachina) / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

This is the second time this little Kachina Doll has found his way onto the auction, but it’s not the second time I’ve painted him. There’s another, larger version on my website, as well as other Wolf (Kweo)Kachinas.

“The Kachinas, carriers of messages to the heavens asking for rain, productive crops, fertility, all the things of a good, simple life, are represented in these small dolls, carved from cottonwood root, and given to the children as tools for learning the intricacies of the Hopi religion. They have, over the years, also become much sought after by collectors. Their primitive, yet sophisticated design speaks to me much as African art spoke to artists such as Picasso.”
