ALMOST THERE!

As visiting Italian friends once said, “You sure have long roads!”  Indeed, that last few miles at the end of a long eight hour drive from Phoenix, fighting off drowsiness, but drawn by the tempting lights of the City Different, twinkling in the distance, used to seem to take forever. Tired, but excited to be back in the Land of Enchantment, looking forward to a delicious meal of New Mexican green chile and a good night’s rest, followed by a day of sightseeing, strolling, and shopping, I would wake up and push on and before I knew it, would be driving up Cerrillos Road. Home again!

GALLERY SHOPPING

While I was still living in Santa Fe, I noticed a potential gallery space, went around the block, and took a quick couple of shots in passing. I later made an appointment to see the space, but didn’t quite see how I could make it work for me at the time. Close, but not quite. I still feel an urge to reconsider it, but have decided that travel is more important to me at for now.

One of the most endearing features of Southwestern and adobe architecture  is the soft, curving, undulating lines of this hand made, natural, non-manufactured approach to building.

When trolling through my research for subjects to paint for this blog, I stumbled across the image that was the inspiration for this painting. I could hardly wait to get into it.

Ahhh, the City Different. I miss it. But then I miss just about everyplace I’ve ever been, and every place I haven’t been. I’m at home, yet I’m homesick even for places I don’t yet know exist.

Some folks have a taste only for the hustle and bustle, the noise, and vibrant tone of a big city. Others prefer the tranquil, laid back quiet of small towns, Some seek the solitude of forest or desert. Most seem to prefer their favorite, their comfort zone, to the exclusion of the other possibilities.

Not this happy camper. I like it all. I like an apartment in New York, Paris, Buenos Aires. I like Betsy on the streets of Los Angeles. Or in the depths of Canyon de Chelly, the Ponderosa forests and streamsides of Northern Arizona. I like small towns, like Taos, and living in old adobe walls with mud floors, or San Antonio de Areco, in Argentina, or Guanajuato in Mexico. I like living in hotels in Nice, or Sevilla, or Mexico City, roaming the streets, photographing people. But none of them to the exclusion of the others.

What about you? Where do you live? Where would you like to live? Are you content living in one place, or do you feel the need for frequent change?
