Still life

I see it still has wheels; maybe its life isn’t over yet. I’ll bet the owner still has plans for it…

FIELD GLASSES / Daily Painting #1326

Field Glasses / Watercolor / 7×10 Inches / To magnify, touch the Image.

Field glasses, that’s what we used to call them. Binoculars seems to have taken over as their most common name. I remember the heft of them, and the way they fit so snug in their felt lined, leather case. The way there was always a subtle “pop”, when they finally broke free of the case. Things are different now. I love the things that technology has enabled me to do, but I miss the feel, the smells, the sounds of those times gone by. I feel most fortunate to have lived then and now.

STILL LIFE IN A SPANISH HOTEL / Daily Painting #1295

Still Life in a Spanish Hotel / Ink and Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

It was far and away the worst hotel I encountered on my entire trip. But it did have the most interesting things to paint and memories that will last; so how could I complain?

I checked in late and left early the next morning, swearing to read all the reviews when booking ahead on the Internet in the future.

If you would like to own today’s painting, send your bid (Minimum $200) in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

BURGER AND FRIES / Daily Painting #1222

We, Thea and I, decided to take it easy today. We stayed home, rested, took care of some business, rested, ate left overs, then, well rested, went with our friends to something called Fabricas de Aurora. An old industrial complex that has been turned into beautiful studios and gallery spaces. It is huge, and it was crowded. We only had time to take in about half of it, but hope to return when it's not opening night, and see if we can learn more about it.

We saw a lot of antiques there, and art, and the thing that caught my eye, screaming to be painted, was this half-eaten hamburger on the office desk in one of the gallery spaces. Someone must have had to jump up and take care of a collector.

Next, we went to HECHO IN MEXICO, a jam-packed restaurant for a drink and a very nice dinner, and now we are back in Casa Laura getting ready for an early start for tomorrow's adventures.

¡Hasta Mañana!

FRIDA’S BEDSIDE / Daily Painting #1216

Frida's Bedside / Watercolor and Ink / 6 x 9 inches

These pencils and brushes were on the nightstand next to Frida's bed. For some reason, they've been on my mind all day.

We left Mexico City today, and arrived right at sunset at Casa Laura. More about that, later. But, for now, a short post and a soft bed.

¡Hasta Mañana!

STILL LIFE AT FRIDA’S / Daily Painting #1215

Still Life at Frida's / Watercolor and ink / 6 x 9 inches

We got in a day of museum hopping today, beginning with a taxi ride out to Coyoacán, for the Watercolor Museum, Museo Nacional de la Acuarela Alfredo Guati Rojo, where we saw an interesting show featuring the works of a Peruvian and a Cuban. This is a beautiful small museum, and also contains a permanent exhibit of Watercolor in Mexico from Pre-Hispanic times to the present.

Next, we re-visited the home of Frida Kahlo, the Casa Azul, where the iconic Mexican Artist, wife of muralist Diego Rivera, was born, lived, and died. This is a fascinating museum, and our favorite part is the kitchen, with its collections of ceramics and striking blue and yellow tiles. And the subject of today's painting.

We returned to the Centro Historico for a visit to show Thea Diego's mural, Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, which was saved and carefully moved from its former location in the Hotel Del Prado which was demolished in the 1985 earthquake to its own museum.

We topped off the day with a walk through the Alameda Park and an exceptional last Mexico City dinner at my old favorite Los Girasoles.

Next stop, San Miguel de Allende.
