AT THE TAILOR’S / Daily Painting #1138

If you would like to own today's painting, send your bid (Minimum $200) in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

I think of this as a found still life, because, although it was originally set up as a formal display to show off the tailor's work, it has become a bit messy, and less formal over time. Also, there is the fact that as the artist, I did nothing to change, re-arrange, or “set up” this still life. I simply painted my reaction to it, as found.

Part of the delay I'm experiencing is the experimenting and searching for the best materials to take with me for the sort of work I will be doing in my travels. This study in grays, for instance, is a found still life on a paper I found in Santa Fe, yesterday, at Artisans. It's a FLUiD Watercolor Block, 140 lb, Cold Press Finish.

It comes in a 6 x 6 inch block, glue bound on two edges. I like it. And it felt good working in that square format again. I also tried one on their Hot Press Finish block, but I'm not crazy about the result. I'll try them both again tomorrow. I have one more paper to try then it will be time to decide!

I saw this young woman in the Prado Museum in Madrid. She was lost in contemplation and awe of the master works surrounding her. Was she an artist, a collector, a historian? Or was she simply someone with a natural appreciation of art? What do you think?

I had a bit of luck while visiting the Prado. I had been scouring the web and bookstores both new and used, trying to find a book of paintings by Mariano Fortuny, the 17th Century Catalan painter whose watercolors, though relatively rare, are among the finest ever painted. All to no avail. In fact, it seemed obvious none existed. Yet, there in the Prado's gift shop, was a beautiful book of Fortuny's life and work. It now has a home in my collection, of course.

Here's a beautful little Fortuny 2 x 6 inch watercolor, Moors on Horseback, from the Metropolitan Museum in New York:
