That's what I did. I left Yuma. Headed North, planning to work my way over to Wickenburg for the big rodeo this weekend. I took it easy today, caught up on some reading, got Betsy's fluids topped off and her tires checked. Didn't make it over to the old Territorial Prison, or a couple of other things I wanted to check out, but my feet started itching and I decided to leave something for next time. Besides, what's Yuma without Thea?

AUTUMN

I took a quick drive out to the pueblo a couple of evenings ago, and the setting sun was casting its golden glow across the tops of the trees lining the road. I’ve missed most of the fall colors this year, as I’ve been so busy getting ready to resume my travels. After so much time in the studio, even this brief drive was almost like traveling! Besides, I got a nice little painting out of it.

FOUND SCULPTURE

Old trucks dot the alfalfa fields in and around Taos, New Mexico. These battered work horses haul hay, tools, equipment  from place to place on the farms and ranches, and wait patiently between chores. Sometimes they’re replaced by newer trucks, or even All Terrain Vehicles, and are left where they were last used, to blend into the scenery, fading into the earth, consumed, slowly, by rust, like sculptures unattended, pleasing to the eye and touching the heart.

BURNT PLAIN

The views from our house above the Rio Chiquito and the Rio Grande del Rancho, include beautiful sunsets most evenings, as we look across the valley to Llano Quemado (Burnt Plain), and on across the Carson Plateau. As day turns to night, the lights of Llano Quemado and Ranchos de Taos slowly appear, and begin to twinkle in the distance.

THE WAY BACK

This one painted itself. I had some shapes and I had some colors. Still an abstract based on those ingredients, it suddenly, toward the end of the session, turned unexpectedly into a suggestion of an abstract landscape. Where is this series taking me?

SUNSET STUDIES

I don’t know how long I would last if I had to live where I couldn’t see a blue distant mountain and beautiful sunsets. But if I had to, something like this little painting would sure help to keep me sane. Well, if I happened to be sane in the first place, that is. Maybe I should say it would help keep me from getting more crazy, huh?

This daily painting thing has given me the opportunity to paint several sunsets that I might not have done larger. In fact, when I get back to painting larger paintings again I’m sure there will be quite a few subjects and ideas based on these smaller works. Meanwhile, I’ll just keep on trying to paint big paintings on small panels.

ROAD TRIP Continued

After finishing off our green chile cheeseburgers, we beat it on down, past Three Rivers, through Tularosa, and on to Alamogordo, where we met Leo and his family and Betsy. No, not the famous Betsy VW, this was Betsy Chevrolet, the object of our quest. We had a nice, long visit with this nice family, then loaded the pickup onto the dolly, and off we went, back to Carrizozo. When we stopped there for gas, we noticed that the wheels of the pickup were cockeyed on the tow dolly. We had a hard time re-adjusting the tie down straps until a stranger came over and gave us a hand. And the chef from Kelly’s saw us and came over to offer his help. Pretty friendly town.

Next, we headed out for Soccoro, as we wanted to take the freeway where we would be able to more easily get help if we had any more problems than on the back road we had come down on. The sun was setting and we were treated to some beautiful sunset effects like the one above.

To be continued

If you haven’t already, be sure to scroll all the way down to read about your chance to participate in the creation of a documentary Be Home Soon.

And start getting ready for THE KACHINAS ARE COMING. That’s the big Kachina show Thea wil be putting on of my Kachina paintings the first of September at David Anthony Fine Arts, here in Taos. I hope to see you there!
