MM, RACER / Daily Painting #993

Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

Today, my daily photograph is about age and rust and nostalgia, and so is this daily painting. While visitng the home of another friend and collector recently, I just couldn't pass up this cute little rusty antique race car, piloted by a famous mouse.

When I saw these two little scooter ponies at the flea market in Quartzsite I was tempted, briefly, very briefly, to mount one on top of Betsy, sort of like an oversized take on a hood ornament. Sometimes it's best to keep one's creativity in check! I'm sure they would look much better on your wall.

Meanwhile, I took my iPhone to the classic car show today in Wickenburg, and let my creative urges run wild…

VROOOOM!!! Daily Painting #851

VROOOOM!!!

(Rubber motorcycle cop toy from the 1940s)

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

I've been sneaking up on this one for a long time. Finally got up my nerve and decided to give it a go. Glad I did! That was fun, and I feel I managed to inject a bit of motion into a still subject. Besides, maybe it will bring back fond memories to someone.

Another day devoted to finding, managing and backing up images. Made a lot of progress, but there's still much to do. The more I learn, though, the faster it goes, of course.

NOTE:

I've decided to start posting as soon as the blog is ready, rather than waiting for midnight as I have been doing. This has become difficult while traveling and trying to change to an earlier schedule.

NEW NOTE:

Thea has suggested that we open the bidding window to a week. So here goes. From now until further notiice the bidding will remain open for one week from time of posting. Please let us know how you feel about this change, pro or con. Any suggestions you have will also be considered.

We greatly appreciate the support shown by our followers, commentors, viewers, and, especially, our bidders and collectors. Thanks again to all of you from both of us.

MY FORMER STUDIO

A little reminder of my sixtieth birthday party twelve years ago in Cuernavaca and all the great friends and family who joined us there. My books, too, many of them gone, many more packed away, since closing my studio in Santa Fe. I still miss that studio, the best I ever had. Some were better located, one, at least, was majestic by comparison, a couple of others more unusual. I’ll never forget any of them. But this one is my favorite, because it was my most productive.

But I finally had to make a choice. And travel won.  My renewed passport arrived a couple of days ago. I’m wrapping up as many of the projects started over the summer as possible, packing  and getting my gear ready. I’ll be hitting the trail again, soon. No set date, yet. Before the first snow, I hope. No set plan, either, other than to go to Victorville, California, to rescue Betsy, and to Los Angeles for the Southwest Museum Kachina Show at the Autry Museum.

I’ll keep you posted, of course, and you are invited to ride along.

Charro Doll

This papier-mâché Mexican Charro Doll delighted me when I spotted it on the shelf of a local shop. I have a couple of Charros like this that I bought in Guanajuato back in ’73, as well as a jockey doll. Unfortunately, I never had a horse for them to ride. I did have a carved wooden horse, complete with leather saddle, bridle, and real miniature serape when I was a kid, but it’s been missing from my adult life. The surprising thing is that I’ve never seen another like it. I did find some of the old ceramic piggy banks like I had then, and in fact, now have a collection ranging from about an inch in length to a foot or longer.

Thea and I picked up these little 19th century lead race horses at a street antiques fair in Paris several years ago, and I finally got around to painting them! I don’t think this will be the last time I paint them,  though. I really had fun painting this little “not-so-still” life.
