Still Life with Mirror / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches
While I will occasionally set up a “formal” still-life arrangement, I generally have more fun working on “found still-lifes”, those random, chance, serendipitous arrangements that catch my eye and insist on being either photographed or painted. Or both. Like this painting. Just a simple reflection in a motel mirror somewhere, Atlanta, maybe, or Albuquerque. Alone in a room, glancing around, suddenly I feel the urge to grab my camera and record these shapes, this overflowing emptiness. Days, months, years go by and every time I come across this image in my files, I’m tempted by it. It’s like an itch. It wants my attention. And now, with these little daily paintings, I have an opportunity to give it new life. Challenging, satisfying, it makes me anxious to get back to the easel again tomorrow.
