Another Cow Kachina? Obviously Wakas is one of my favorites. Cattle were introduced to the Hopi people by the Spaniards. The Spanish for cows is vacas, which explains the Hopi version, Wakas.
I was long perplexed by the English word, Sherry, said to hace derived from the name of the town of its origen in Jerez de la Frontera, in Spain’s Andalucia. Jerez, pronounced herez, just didn’t evolve easily in my mind into Sherry. Harry’s, maybe, but not Sherry.
The problem was solved on my recent visit to Jerez, when, as I was leaving the train station I noticed a small tienda across the street. Its name on a large sign above the entrance was Xerez. Apparently an early spelling of the town’s name. That x would have been pronounced like the something between a soft h and the soft ch of the French word cheri. And with a slight slurring of the final z, we have shery, but with a rolled r, doubled and dropped by the English.
That’s my thinking, anyway. A better theory from someone more learned would be appreciated here. But for me, for now, it’s problem solved.
