NIGHTSTAND Daily Painting #10

Nightstand / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches ©JohnFarnsworthNightstand / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

During May of last year, I had the pleasure of teaching a workshop in the Dordogne region of France. This was a scene in my room at Le Petit Rousset, on the edge of the small Bastide town of Eymet.   Click on for details. The painting is an unusual combination of still life and self-portrait.  That’s me in the photo on the nightstand, holding a hand carved wooden pen my co-teacher, Kathy Dunham, had given me. And the bed? Believe me, it was a welcome sight after long days of teaching, exploring, and socializing. There are quite a few photographs from that trip on my other daily blog,, and I expect there will be more paintings from the same trip showing up here in the days to come.

Geese at El Encanto / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

When in the Phoenix area, we often stop in at El Encanto Restaurant in Cave Creek, a favorite of locals and tourists alike. Great Mexican Food, a Patio that wraps around a large pond, and these fellows to entertain us while our food is being prepared.

Flamenco Dancer / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 inches / ©JohnFarnsworthPortrait of a Flamenco Dancer / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

In a small Peña Flamenca in Jerez de la Frontera, a beautiful Flamenco Dancer pauses briefly as another dances. I love watching and listening to Flamenco dancers, both here and in Spain. Bizet’s Carmen is one of my favorite films. Painting dancers dancing, with all the motion and grace, is exciting, but so, too is capturing the dignified, poised character of a dancer at rest or preparing to dance or sing. Those “moments in between” are especially captivating and inspiring to me. Bizet’s Carmen is one of my favorite films.

SANTO Daily Painting #5

Santo / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

While walking around Santa Fe one evening, looking for ideas, I came across this Santo in a store window. In place of the original elegance and fine craftmanship there was now the patina of age, the signs  of years of love and neglect The scars and chipped paint, the missing tip of the nose, all told, or rather, suggested stories of the passage of time.

LA RAZA PURA Daily Painting #4

La Raza Pura ©JohnFarnsworth La Raza Pura / Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

At the Yeguada de la Cartuja, Spain’s Royal breeding farm of the Cartusian horse just outside Jerez de la Frontera in Spain’s Andalucia,  La Raza Pura, the pure Spanish bred horse, in groups, first of stallions, then of yearlings, followed by the mothers and their offspring, is put through a series of movements designed to show them to their best advantage for prospective breeders and a crowd of excited spectators.

This noble line, extending back, uninterrupted, to a time before Columbus, was originally the product of Cartusian Monks, part of whose monastery grounds is now the Yeguada. If you’re in the area, be sure not to miss the breathtaking equestrian show, display of carriages, and tour of the grounds of this magnificent facility.

I told you there would be horses. Now, what will be next?
