TIME TO RIDE

A young bull rider prepares to mount an angry, uncooperative bull, a bull that's determined to get out of that buckin' chute, and out from under that rider.

MASCARA TORO II / Daily Painting #1226

Here's a companion piece for Mascara Toro, the earlier piece based on a Mexican Dance Mask from the beautiful Galeria Atotonilco to visit the amazing home, museum and showroom, all rolled into one. Works representing the crafts of all areas of Mexico, including textiles, masks, ceramics, paintings, sculpture, and more fill the museum. Fantastic.

We had a slow day today. We got off to a late start, but had a nice lunch at the previously mentioned little bistro/café the name of which still escapes me. We walked around, exploring some new streets, sat for a while in the Jardin, people watching, then ended up at the Instituto Allende, for a nice dinner and some stirring Flamenco.

A nice, slow day, ending with a great date in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.

¡Hasta Mañana!

The other athlete in the arena. People ride these things. For sport. Sometimes for money. Big money.

Sorry, they don't make money big enough to get me on one. Not now, of course, but not when I was younger, either.

Hats off to those who do ride, and to those mighty mounds of challenge, the bulls of rodeo.

RED BULL

Oh, he can appear to be calm and docile, slow and languorous in the bull pen. His eyes can be huge and deep, and inviting, but out in the arena, with a cowboy on his back and a strap around his flank, he can be a big, fast, explosive, dangerous performer, and a favorite of the rodeo fans.

Just a week until fall, and already a slight nip in the air. I finally got my passport renewal under way. My new passport should be here in about three weeks. As soon as possible after it arrives, I hope to leave for Victorville, California, to join Betsy for the resumption of our adventures. My feet are in full itch mode. lol

CLOSE CALL

I almost ran out of panels. I was a few days late calling in my order to Artisans in Santa Fe, and have been biting my nails for the past few days. I had just one panel left when they called this morning to let me know my order had come in! We called our friends Gari and Kayce and cousins Ann and Karol and Jerry, and friends Judy and Jeff to set up a dinner date and jumped in the van, headed for Santa Fe.

We were treated to a fantastic display of clouds all the way there.

We picked up the panels and a few items Thea needed for her framing. Then we went to Verizon where Iwas able to have my plan adjusted to reflect my reduced data usage while home-based.

I took Thea to the mall for some necessary shopping where I did today’s painting in the parking lot, (I could hardly wait to make a cloud painting after that great drive) and got a good start on this blog post!

Now it’s off to dinner, and I’ll finish up tonight at home.

SMILE! (COWBOY COMIN’ UNSTUCK) Daily Photograph #1,654

Smile! (Cowboy Comin' Unstuck)

SMILE!

We had a nice visit with our friends, although the noise and terrible acoustics in the restaurant made it nearly impossible for me to hear the conversation. Jerry and Karol left early as they had tickets for the Opera. Following dinner, we went next door to the Eldorado Hotel’s Agave Bar for a drink and some more conversation. I could even hear most of it!

We made it home safe and sound. Atticus was thrilled to see us. And that’s about it for today, except for this

GREAT NEWS!

From Melissa Howden and Kickstarter:

Bowing in Gratitude

One of my backers texted me early this morning that the goal had been reached. Another sent a Facebook message – all before I saw it here with my very own eyes. 3 days to go and several people I know are still in the process…and the goal has been not only reached but surpassed.

I have said this to some of you and I will say it here again, I am truly Honored and Humbled by all of your support, and the faith you have shown by backing this project.

At this moment I am not sure what else to say. I am overwhelmed.

Because of you the film goes to the lab tomorrow and the sound designer today.

Because of you this film will see the light of day, or better a darkened theater.

With so much gratitude and love,

Melissa

I went to the Taos Rodeo today, and took a lot of photographs. But what caught my eye was this eye that I caught. This is one of the bulls the bull riders ride. Or try to. They don’t all make it very far. Well, a split second on one of these mountains of energy would be far enough, no, too far, way to far for me. Eight seconds must seem like an eternity for those who make it to the buzzer.

BIG AL JOHNSON

BIG AL JOHNSON

I ran into an old friend, Big Al, at the rodeo. He was there taking photographs as well. This is a shot of Big Al taken on a day a while back, when he put together a large group of horses in a double walled circular pen where he ran them for me so I could shoot  research photographs for a commission. Click here or on the photograph to learn more about him and the fabulous trail rides he offers on Taos Mountain.
