Sedona Slim probably isn't from Sedona, at all. In fact, he's probably from Wickenburg. That's where I shot the research this character study is based on; at the Wickenburg Gold Rush Days Parade. But I painted him in Sedona, just steps from my old studio that I painted in for a time on my return from Mexico in 1973. And, somehow, the name, Sedona Slim, which came to me as I was painting, just seemed to fit.

Why Sedona? Because I stopped there for lunch and to do today's painting, on my way to meet my bride in Winslow, at the La Posada. She came in on the train from Lamy to join me for a week. Yippee!

Gotta go now!

PARK RANGER Daily Painting #865

PARK RANGER

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

National Park Rangers cover all the bases. Enforcement, upkeep, planning, development and public service, serving as information dispensers, lecturers, and as the face of government in dealing with the public on a daily basis.

Today I hit the big Quartzsite RV show. Or maybe I should say it hit me. It took all of three and a half hours just to cover it all. It was mainly aimed at the folks traveling in those giant land yachts, dragging “toads”, hauling motocycles and ATVs, big screen TVs and the satellite dishes to make them work, plus solar panels, generators and on and on. There didn't seem to be many of those like myself who prefer life in a “nimble rod”, able to go anywhere at the drop of a hat, no hookups needed, thank you.

Still I enjoyed the day, got my painting done, today's subject was there, dispensing information relative to National Parks in the Southwest to an appreciative crowd, and now I'm off to the desert for another great sleep wrapped in the scent of the creosote bush. Have to stay on high ground, though, as it's raining, and flash flooding can be a real and serious danger in the normally dry desert.

I think I'll stick around and explore the surrounding area for a few more days. I was born in Arizona and lived there most of my life and had never even heard of Bouse. There are a lot of parts of both Arizona and New Mexico that I want to know better. It's so easy to fly through an area on the Interstate, and feel as though you know it, when you have no idea of its real character. Funny thing is, it seems to take forever to cross the endless desert that way. But when you slow down, take your time, and get to know it, it seems much smaller and more manageable.
