KIVA SHADOWS / Daily Painting #1188

KIVA SHADOWS / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches

Regular followers are probably aware of my fondness for taking subjects as I find them, as in my “confections” series, as opposed to more formal set ups.

This menacing little Chaveyo Kachina from our own collection, though, having been painted several times, seemed ready to appear in a staged painting.

The one disappointment at the time I was privileged to witness dances in the Hopi Kivas, was the use of Coleman lanterns with their characteristically harsh, cold, white light. So I thought it would be fun to romanticize this scene a bit and paint it as I imagined it would appear by firelight.

Now, that was fun!

KWAA (EAGLE KACHINA) Daily Painting #1046

Watercolor / 7 x 9 inches

This Kwaa Kachina used to hang in the middle of a beautiful display of really fine old Tihu, or Kachina dolls, in the Southwest Museum, on Mount Washington, California. I visited it many times over the years and have painted it several times, in various poses and with different interpretations in mind. I’m not done with him yet.

TASAF KACHINA / Daily Painting #1042

Watercolor / 7 x 9 inches

I've painted this Kachina, and, in fact, this particular doll, fom my own collection, previously on this blog. In fact, this doll was the subject of my first Kachina painting, in the 1960s. To learn more, just search for the name, Tasaf, above. This Hopi Kachina is a representation of their neighbors, the Navajo.

As you can see, I've decided to continue the current series of watercolors. i haven't, however, decided how long this will continue, nor, for that matter, what size I will eventually settle on. My best guess at the moment is that they will settle around 6 x 9 inches. I will probably alternate between the oils and the watercolors.

HOLI KACHINA Daily Painting #909

HOLI KACHINA

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

If you would like to own this painting, just send your bid in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

This Kachina appears in mixed dances and is named for the sound he makes, chanting Holi – Holi. With his eagle feather ears, carved in this example, like the rest of him, from the root of a cottonwood tree, he is one of my favorite Katsinam to paint. I have done many variations in both oil and watercolor. The stripe across the face and behind the eyes is said to represent lightning.
