The Stare

The Stare / iPhone 4s / Snapseed

An experiment:

Are you wondering who you are as a photographer? Trying to find your own voice, your style? Try this: take a little road, trip or a walk. An hour or two. Carry only a polaroid camera.

Take the same trip with a single, long, lens. Over a period of days, try it with just your smartphone. Then with just a medium lens.

Do it again; this time with a wide angle lens only. Once more; shooting video.

You might even want to try an old super eight movie camera.

Try a couple of cameras you’re most familiar with, then a couple you’re least comfortable with.

Try the most expensive gear you can get your hands on, then the least expensive you can find.

Put them all in one folder on your computer. Leave them for a month or two.

Then go back and look through them. You just might find your true self in the process.

“Gosh, I would love to be a better writer, but all I have is a pencil.

Now, if only I had an IBM electric typewriter, or at least a sterling silver Mont Blanc fountain pen with gold filigree, I could write a great novel!”

Sound familiar, photographers?

OLD TIMER

This western character was a spectator at Clint Mortenson's National Day of the Cowboy, south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. @SteveBundy, @SteveImmel and I recently enjoyed a day there, photographing and watching events like barrel racing, cowboy polo, sharpshooting, and horsemanship.

Here’s another from Dwellings Revisited in Taos. I’m not entirely sure this one is considered a Saint. A Santo? Maybe, I don’t know. Does anyone out there know? I’ll bet everyone knows who it is, though.

Some have requested background music. I am considering it, but so far am convinced you would like hearing music of your own choosing better than any thing I might come up with. Any more thoughts out there?

My apologies for this late post. Technical problems combined with busy but thoroughly enjoyable serial visits from family and friend houseguests for the past several days (weeks?) are partly responsible. As am I, of course.

The Santo inspiration for today’s image is from Dwellings Revisited, the shop of our dear friend, Cam Martin, on Bent Street, here in Taos. Cam’s is a great little store jam-packed with I want ’ems. Thanks, Cam!

Whoa! Thea came home from the gallery this evening and asked why I didn't poste today's painting? I said i did! Well, I just checked, and apparently she's right! My apologies everyone; I've been running too tired the past few days. I will try to do better. I will also, at the first opportunity get caught up, again, on my responses to all your so appreciated comments.
I found this Santo in my research archives, but I can't recall where I first came across the research. I found him an intriguing subject, whever I found him, and he was a pleasure to paint.

I did lock myself in my room today, and I now have a video demo to show you. But it's late, and I don't want to miss check out time tomorrow. I think it wise to wait until tomorrow, after I've had a chance to go over it with a fresh eye. Also, I will need to figure out how best to present it.
