A couple in a small cafe in Argentina have a late night conversation over cups of espresso. Maybe not quite street photography, but definitely a part of the great pastime of people watching.

Couldn’t wait to paint the second in this little mini-series based on a quick iPhone snapshot taken while driving through Arroyo Seco last evening, on the way to a house concert at our friend Patty Traynor’s. If you haven’t already, you might like to read about the genesis of this series on yesterday’s post.

A PATH IN SECO Daily Painting #777

While driving through Arroyo Seco this evening, on the way to a friend’s house, I shot a few quick iPhone photos, in an attempt to capture the fading light of evening on the colors of late autumn. Well, none of the photographs came out. Not as photographs, anyway. However, areas cropped from just a couple of them resulted in ideas for at least a dozen paintings. That’s the beauty of the iPhone for me. While it can, at times, make really good photographs,  it can also, if pushed beyond its limits,  make an image that serves not as a photograph, but as a sketch or a thought for a painting. Just enough information is captured, and colors suggested, that the mood comes through. leaving room for interpretation rather than replication.

All this during a brief drive in which I didn’t have time to make even one actual sketch.

That old piggy bank has been in my collection since childhood, the bean pot is a more recent acquisition. The green Tzintzuntzan plate in the rear is part of a set brought back from a trip to Mexico to teach my first workshop twenty plus years ago. It’s been nice spending time among these minor treasures, but it’s going to snow soon, and I’m getting some really itchy feet. Still a bit more work to do before I can get away. But I’m working on it.

Out here in the Southwest, you see them all over the place. Collections of old junk cars and trucks. Twisted and bent, baking in the sun, they patiently await  the restoration that never comes, and return  slowly to the earth. I suspect they’re the same all over the country, but in other places, the lush green vegetation keeps them hidden away.

EXPRESSION

She’s listening attentively, but is she listening skeptically, appreciatively, admiringly, or with gentle resistance? What do you think she has on her mind? What do you think she might be hearing, and from whom? What do you think she’s about to say? Can you make a one or two paragraph story based on this painting?

AUTUMN

I took a quick drive out to the pueblo a couple of evenings ago, and the setting sun was casting its golden glow across the tops of the trees lining the road. I’ve missed most of the fall colors this year, as I’ve been so busy getting ready to resume my travels. After so much time in the studio, even this brief drive was almost like traveling! Besides, I got a nice little painting out of it.

FOUND SCULPTURE

Old trucks dot the alfalfa fields in and around Taos, New Mexico. These battered work horses haul hay, tools, equipment  from place to place on the farms and ranches, and wait patiently between chores. Sometimes they’re replaced by newer trucks, or even All Terrain Vehicles, and are left where they were last used, to blend into the scenery, fading into the earth, consumed, slowly, by rust, like sculptures unattended, pleasing to the eye and touching the heart.

GALLERY SHOPPING

While I was still living in Santa Fe, I noticed a potential gallery space, went around the block, and took a quick couple of shots in passing. I later made an appointment to see the space, but didn’t quite see how I could make it work for me at the time. Close, but not quite. I still feel an urge to reconsider it, but have decided that travel is more important to me at for now.

One of the most endearing features of Southwestern and adobe architecture  is the soft, curving, undulating lines of this hand made, natural, non-manufactured approach to building.

When trolling through my research for subjects to paint for this blog, I stumbled across the image that was the inspiration for this painting. I could hardly wait to get into it.

A FRIENDLY GESTURE

A young woman gives directions to an older person while standing in a city park. This is just the sort of simple human gesture painting that grows out of my twin loves of street photography and people watching. Early in my career, I was most interested in painting people when they were in ethnic costume. Then I bought a book, My Art, My Life, by Diego Rivera. The frontispiece was a painting of a standing profile of a woman in traditional costume. It occurred to me that he had painted a woman from his own culture, and that I could, as well. Also, about that time, I became aware of a movement in contemporary art that included works by the likes of Duane Hansen, Alex Katz and others, who were depicting the people around them. That’s when I started painting the everyday people around me. Now, some thirty five years later, the thrill has not lessened.
