A couple in a small cafe in Argentina have a late night conversation over cups of espresso. Maybe not quite street photography, but definitely a part of the great pastime of people watching.

Couldn’t wait to paint the second in this little mini-series based on a quick iPhone snapshot taken while driving through Arroyo Seco last evening, on the way to a house concert at our friend Patty Traynor’s. If you haven’t already, you might like to read about the genesis of this series on yesterday’s post.

A PATH IN SECO Daily Painting #777

PATH IN SECO

While driving through Arroyo Seco this evening, on the way to a friend’s house, I shot a few quick iPhone photos, in an attempt to capture the fading light of evening on the colors of late autumn. Well, none of the photographs came out. Not as photographs, anyway. However, areas cropped from just a couple of them resulted in ideas for at least a dozen paintings. That’s the beauty of the iPhone for me. While it can, at times, make really good photographs,  it can also, if pushed beyond its limits,  make an image that serves not as a photograph, but as a sketch or a thought for a painting. Just enough information is captured, and colors suggested, that the mood comes through. leaving room for interpretation rather than replication.

All this during a brief drive in which I didn’t have time to make even one actual sketch.

PIGGY BANK AND BEAN POT Daily Painting #776

That old piggy bank has been in my collection since childhood, the bean pot is a more recent acquisition. The green Tzintzuntzan plate in the rear is part of a set brought back from a trip to Mexico to teach my first workshop twenty plus years ago. It’s been nice spending time among these minor treasures, but it’s going to snow soon, and I’m getting some really itchy feet. Still a bit more work to do before I can get away. But I’m working on it.

Out here in the Southwest, you see them all over the place. Collections of old junk cars and trucks. Twisted and bent, baking in the sun, they patiently await  the restoration that never comes, and return  slowly to the earth. I suspect they’re the same all over the country, but in other places, the lush green vegetation keeps them hidden away.

EXPRESSION

She’s listening attentively, but is she listening skeptically, appreciatively, admiringly, or with gentle resistance? What do you think she has on her mind? What do you think she might be hearing, and from whom? What do you think she’s about to say? Can you make a one or two paragraph story based on this painting?

AUTUMN

I took a quick drive out to the pueblo a couple of evenings ago, and the setting sun was casting its golden glow across the tops of the trees lining the road. I’ve missed most of the fall colors this year, as I’ve been so busy getting ready to resume my travels. After so much time in the studio, even this brief drive was almost like traveling! Besides, I got a nice little painting out of it.
