BEFORE THE RIDE

A behind the scenes look at a Charro in the solemn moments before his daring ride on a wild, bucking bull. I have been photographing more than just cute kids at the Charreadas, but there have been a lot of those, too.

Hasta mañana.

JUMPER / Daily Painting #1071

Pen and Ink / Watercolor / 6 x 8 inches

The incredible combination of grace and power, weight and weightlessness of jumpers never fails to amaze me.

Here's another in the popular new series, “Confections”. I'm having a great time with these, and apparently so are many of you. Be the first person in with a $100 bid, and it's yours!

That's right. The first hundred takes it.

Escaramuza (Skirmish), is an important part of the Mexican rodeo, or Charreada. Young women, dressed in colorful, flowing costumes, riding side-saddle, perform thrilling precision drill team maneuvers.

DOWN THE DUSTY TRAIL / Daily Painting #929

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

If you would like to own this painting, just send your bid in an email to: farnsworthgallery@newmex.com, or call Thea at 505 982-4561.

I'm not sure where this trail I'm on is leading, but I sure am enjoying it. I've always bounced around as far as subject matter, mainly to avoid boredom, and to avoid being pigeon-holed. But now, I'm bouncing around from style to style more than I ever have. That's what I like about painting these dailies. There's something for just about everyone, and they keep me excited and anxious to do more.

In case you haven't visited When a Painter Snaps lately, I've been making some major changes to the look of that blog. Well, today, I bit the bullet and changed this one to match. Something didn't work right, though. I couldn't get back to the way it was, so I had to try something different. I like both, but would love to know which you prefer.

I have to tell you, I don't know where these semi abstract rider paintings are taking me. Into some as yet uncharted territory, for sure. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see. Meanwhile…

NOTE:

I spent quite a bit of time recently, responding to comments on previous posts. For some unknown reason, most of them never showed up on the blog. I'm working on a solution. In the meantime, I hope all of you who have left comments here and on whenapaintersnaps know how very much your comments are appreciated and how important they are to me, especially when I'm tempted to falter.

It can be especially difficult to keep both blogs going on a daily basis while traveling. I can't always respond, but I always read and appreciate them.

I would love to see more dialog forming between those who follow my blogs and comment on them. Hint, hint.

PUSHIN’ ‘EM Daily Painting #912

PUSHIN' 'EM

Oil on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches

I don't know where this one came from. I just felt like doing it. Felt good, too. Sort of like an oil version of my confections, those ink line and watercolor wash pieces that I haven't been doing enough of lately. Well, I'm thinking pretty seriously about getting in a plane headed south and giving Betsy a little rest, even though she hasn't complained even once since good ol' Austin Stockdale in victorville made her all better!

I've never been to a Latin country for Semana Santa, and I think that is something I would like to experience at least once. I was in La Peñita de Jaltemba during Easter, back in '73. But that was just a matter of city dwellers from Guadalajara and Tepic coming to the beach to cover it in litter and themselves in multiple layers of sunburn. Neither was a pretty sight. No, I'm thinking more along the lines of religous ceremony and ritual, saints paraded through the streets and all that.

The difficult thing is deciding where to go. Mexico beckons, as always, but so do Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina. Not to mention Spain's Pueblos Blancos. And only a couple of days to decide. If any of you know of a good house sitting gig, that could be the deciding factor.

I had a nice visit with Jim Ballinger at the Phoenix Art Museum, whom I had not seen in several years. The Museum has grown some 400% since I last visited. Amazing!

Then it was off to a most enjoyable dinner with my good friend and collector Tim Thomas. Lots of reminiscing and catching up! Tim follows this blog, and I swear, he knows more about what I've been doing and where I've been than I do!
