BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

The weather is getting nicer and we are enjoying Playing in Thea's garden again. Her irises are really special this year.

DANCING IN THE BREEZE

Here's an iris from Thea's garden. She grows 'em, I shoots 'em!

CAPILLA SANTA RITA DE CASCIA

This chapel in Bernal, New Mexico, was built of stone in 1916. It is named in honor of an Italian nun, the patron saint of the impossible who helps those in need.

FOUND STILL LIFE

I love finding ready made still lifes, informal, unplanned arrangements, like this one that caught my eye today. With its contrasting textures and shapes, along with a tiny bit of color, I feel it is especially interesting.

See you tomorrow…

WHITE SWAN

Hasta mañana.

RED ONION AND GARLIC / Daily Painting #1315

Red Onion and Garlic / Oil on Paper Mounted on Panel / 6 x 6 Inches / Click on the Image to Enlarge

Well, alright, maybe I’m not the most available, the most cooperative, and the most affordable model available. The kitchen is full of models thst have me beat. They’re better looking, besides. And since things in the kitchen are always in a state of flux, the opportunities for found still life subjects are the best in the house.

Whenever I spot something interesting, like this onion and garlic in a small Italian bowl, I whip out my iPhone and snap a few quick shots. I don’t give it much thought at this point. Instead, I act more or less instinctively, shooting rapidly, from varying angles and distances.

Occasionally, an idea will come to me almost instantly, and will demand too be painted as soon as possible. But most often, an image, or group of images, will remain in my files for anywhere from days to years. Then, suddenly, while cruising absent mindedly through my research, something clicks. An image jumps out from the rest and I know its time has come.

That doesn’t always mean it’s ready just as it is, though. It simply means that something in it has resonated in me, and now I have to work with the image, cropping, framing, teasing until it becomes clear to me what the essence of it is, and how best to express that essence.

Then I jump in and push paint around for an hour or two, and Bingo! With luck, there it is. The special something that I saw and can now share with you. Enjoy.

STUDY IN GRAYS / Daily Painting #1229

Study in Grays / Watercolor / 6 x 9 Inches. Slow , but delightful day. Short post. Long, late and leisurely lunch with Gari and Casey and Robert And Annie. Then Thea and I went to the bullfights. Her first. Says she's glad she went, but doesn't care to go again. Pretty disappointing, really. Some scrappy, though small bulls. One fairly good Torero.

Decided I'd rather paint these flowers I saw in the fireplace of the Santa Fe Fine Arts Museum just before we left.
