I’M BAAACK!
I’ve gone from inarticulate to inept! While I’d like to blame all my tech problems on solar flares (thanks Karen) and computer gremlins, I think I must admit to at least some of the blame myself. First off, I’m a tabaholic. No, not the soft drink. The tabs available to users of Firefox, Opera, and other web browsers. Usually, when I have so many open and awaiting my immediate attention that things start to bog down, I just leave those open and switch to a different browser and start adding more tabs. And then another. Shame on me.
Then, while I’m busy juggling all those tabs and all those projects, and working on my website, and posting to my blog, and adding more tabs, some automatic upload raises its ugly head. I download it. Sometimes, carelessly, multiple times. Finally start the upload. When it gets to the part where it says to close all other programs before proceeding, I just leave it and go on to something else. And there it sits, taking up space and who knows what else.
Meanwhile, I’m checking email. Resending email that I forgot or neglected to add attachments or other information to. Or email that I inadvertently sent to Thea, or even to me, instead of the intended recipient.
And a bunch of other stuff, including playing with Atticus, or Thea, or both.
So my computer gets sluggish and starts doing strange things. (So do I, to tell the truth) So I get worried that my hard drive may be getting ready to crash. And when I’m rearranging a shelf and a bunch of cables, I somehow manage to turn off the computer in the middle of all this. It won’t start. It tries, repeatedly, but something goes awry. Must be the hard drive. I keep trying. Finally get it going. Still sluggish, still doing strange things, but running.
Better back up the hard drive. Reattach my two terabyte backup. Great. It’s only half full, and there’s just enough room to back up. So I start. Oh, it’s only going to take a couple of days. Of course it’s still running at midnight when I want to post the newest painting. The painting I’m having a devil of a time getting a decent photo of because of the light in my new space. So I try lots of different lighting setups. Finally get a fairly usable image. Try sending it by wifi to my computer. Nothing. Something is blocking it. Try several other wifi sending apps. No luck. Re-photograph with Lumix tz5 camera, try loading from memory card. Bingo. Time to post.
Sluggish turns to nearly-set cement. Finally, computer hangs, crashes, goes dark. Try several restarts. Nada. Try other devices, backup desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone, damn! The image is now on the probably crashed hard drive, and I had foolishly moved it from the memory card, instead of copying it and leaving it on the card. I know better. Too tired, too sleepy, too frustrated.
Finally, I do something right. I blame the gremlins and go to bed.
OK, it’s morning. Barely. I get up and have a cup of coffee, some toast, feed the cat, and go into the office. I tap the Windows key and Voila!, or as some of the bloggers I follow say, Wa La!, the sleeping giant desktop comes to life. The gremlins must have crawled off to sleep, as well. Carefully, slowly, I work through all the pending upgrades and updates. Close a few tabs. Reshoot the painting in better light. I sync it effortlessly to the computer, crop it, straighten it, and clean it up. So. Here it is. I hope you like it. I’m extending the bidding time to midnight Friday, the 20th.
At least I didn’t have to have my computer towed!
LONGING TO BE FREE Daily Photograph #1,634
LONGING TO BE FREE
A photograph made from a severe crop of a snapshot taken in my former studio in Taos, about ten years ago, with my first serious digital camera, the one and a half megapixel Olympus E100RS. What a camera. What a time that was. What a time this is. Wow. Life really is grand.
Now, while Atticus is napping, I’m off to do some serious computer clean up and tab retirement. So I can start this whole process over again. I love it!
